TITLE:            Interpreter

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

1. High School Diploma or equivalent; Associate degree or 60 credits preferred. 
2. Ability to communicate effectively with non-English speaking students and their parents in both oral and written form.
3. Oral and written fluency in Spanish required.
4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO:  School Manager or Principal

 

JOB GOAL:     To facilitate effective communication between non-English speaking families and their school staffs with regard to instructional programs, school events, parents’ rights and responsibilities (including No Child Left Behind requirements), newsletters and other communications.

 

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:   

1. Provides services to English Language Learners at the request ofthe administration; and works collaboratively with English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)  instructors/tutors, and the family/school liaison (Title I) to accomplish job goals.
2. Assures that all critical documents and information distributed to parents are translated appropriately.
3. Collaborates with family/school liaison to provide outreach services to non-English speaking parents.
4. Interprets for non-English speaking parents during parent/teacher conferences.Translates school related documents, such as report cards, to parents upon request from parents.
5. Is available to interpret for non-English speaking parents during school events such as parent workshops, award days, etc.
6. Provides interpretation or translation for health and guidance services as needed to ensure student safety and well-being.
7. Assists with interpretation in instructional settings when regular ESOL services are not sufficient to allow reasonable academic progress.
8. Performs other duties as assigned. 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:        Non-exempt position. Salary to be established by the Board.
