TITLE: School Security Employee (Security Officer)

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must possess a High School Diploma (or equivalency) with some experience and/or training in a security related field.
  2. Must have the ability to read, write and effectively speak English.
  3. Must have a valid Maryland Driver’s License. 
  4. Must be able to participate in and successfully complete
  5. Maryland Center for School Safety certification training
  6. for School Security Employees.
  7. Must possess ability to learn and apply Talbot County Public School policies, The 2018 Safe to Learn Act and Maryland statutes related to school security.
  8. Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills.

REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services, School Security Coordinator

 

JOB GOAL: Effectively execute assigned tasks and duties to maintain a safe

Environment for Talbot County Public Schools students and staff.

 

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Patrols and monitors assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds and parking lots to deter, detect, report and stop conditions that compromise school security, school policy or violate the law.
  2. Detects, investigates and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.
  3. Assists staff and administrators in crisis and emergency situations.
  4. Monitors, directs and escorts student movement.
  5. Ensures that the building(s) are secured and access to visitors is restricted to a central point of entry.
  6. Assists staff with administrative searches of students, lockers, vehicles and personal belongings as requested.
  7. Seizes and documents contraband.
  8. Assists with drills and emergency preparedness exercises.
  9. Maintains security records, logs and reports.
  10. Reads and responds to email, telephone and text communications.
  11. Monitors and responds to requests for assistance via security handheld radio system.
  12. Attends and successfully completes all training required by Maryland statute and Talbot County Public Schools.
  13. Operates Talbot County Public School vehicles within policy and State Law.
  14. Builds structured, mentor style relationships with students to promote engagement in their education.
  15. Performs security functions at after school events and athletic events as determined by the School Security Coordinator.
  16. Performs all other duties as directed by the School Security Coordinator.

Must have the ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, exhibit manual dexterity  to dial a telephone, key a two-way radio microphone, operate a keyboard, and use a lock and key, hear and understand speech at normal levels, speak in audible tones so that others may understand  clearly, articulate information in an emergency situation, use physical agility and strength to  defend self and detain persons using force if necessary, and have the visual acuity necessary to  observe and comprehend student movement.  

 

Duties are normally performed inside a school/classroom environment and outdoors in all weather conditions.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Non-exempt position. Ten, eleven or twelve month 

Year.  Salary to be established by the Board.
