TITLE: Sign Language Interpreter
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate or equivalency.
- Completion of a recognized program to train as an interpreter for the deaf or equivalent experience as deemed appropriate by TCPS.
- Ability to understand and communicate with both verbal and written skills.
- Knowledge of American Sign Language and manually coded English as assigned.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as Talbot County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
- Demonstrates success in accomplishing tasks akin to those responsibilities listed below.
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Interpret the content message of the teacher, as well as all questions, answers and remarks made by others.

Utilize the communication system appropriate to the student’s needs: i.e. Signed English, Pidgin, ASL, etc.

Become familiar to the vocabulary used in the classroom setting to interpret information as accurately as possible.

Assess the physical setting of the classroom to establish the location most appropriate for serving the student.

Discourage inappropriate dependencies, such as: repetition of information for inattentive student, reminders of assignments, or teacher talking directly to interpreter rather than student.

Reflect a positive professional attitude and appearance.

Maintain confidentiality of information.

Address concerns and questions to the teacher of the hearing impaired or other appropriate professional.

Collaborate with teachers and other service providers regarding student needing interpreting services.

Comes to work regularly and promptly.

Performs other duties as assigned by Director of Special Education or designee.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Non-exempt position. Ten month work year. Salary to
